Yoga, a practice to bring about the union of soul and body, is believed to have
originated about 3000 B.C. which makes it one of the oldest fitness regimes in the world. It combines asanas (poses), Pranayama (breathing exercises ), and meditation to attain overall health and fitness.
The first important tip for Yoga beginners has to do with eating. One should never eat an hour before or after practicing Yoga. The reasons are straightforward and simple. Eating right before practicing Yoga causes much of the energy that should go to Yoga to be used to digest the food just eaten, thereby decreasing the benefits of the Yoga routine. Eating immediately after Yoga which has just caused the body to release toxins into the bloodstream to cleanse the system will divert the energy from that process to digesting the food and decreases the purifying benefits of the Yoga.
Secondly, The clothing worn during Yoga will also affect the person's performance. Clothing should be comfortable and loose without interfering with movement and also able to withstand a lot of stretching and movement. If one chooses to buy Yoga clothes, the clothes chosen should be specifically designed for Yoga and not just regular gym clothes.
A beginner might also consider buying a Yoga mat which will help protect joints and make it more comfortable to continue exercising. The mat should be skid-free, properly cushioned, one that does not bunch up when being used and helps to maximize the enjoyment of the Yoga practice. Buying a quality mat rather than a cheaper one will avoid having to replace it after a short time.
It is also a good idea to set aside a certain time each day to do Yoga, and meditate only as long as it remains enjoyable. Begin each session with some stretching exercises which will help draw awareness to the body and away from the mind and also loosen muscles and tendons. If Yoga is done in the same location each day and in a place that does not have much activity otherwise, the subconscious will become conditioned to meditate there and will create a special vibration in that place.
