How To Discuss Drugs With Your Child

How To Discuss Drugs With Your Child

1. Don't wait until it's too late. Kids can be exposed to drugs at a young age, especially nowadays. You want your child to be well-informed early to avoid them using any drugs.

2. If you never did drugs and don't really know anything about them do research. Go online and get the facts, read stories about recovered addicts. Know the information so you can repeat it to your child.

3. Bring up the drug topic when you and your child are watching a drug-related news story or when you see an anti-drug commercial. If you're watching a movie and someone is smoking marijuana, ask them if they know about it and start the conversation. This makes the conversation seem unplanned and casual.

4. Don't lecture and don't lie. If you lecture your child, they won't be open and they probably won't be paying attention. If your child asks about your experiences with drugs, be honest, you may want to leave out some details though. Don't make it sound fun and don't encourage that they try it. You just have to be honest so your child will trust you and feel comfortable coming to you with questions.

5.Discuss drugs with your child on a fairly regular basis. Don't go overboard and mention it every day, but don't only bring it up once. Keep discussions going and always allow your child to come to you with any questions or concerns that they have about drugs.

6. Be calm, confident, and patient. If you are nervous and awkward, your child will feel it and also feel uncomfortable. Just act like you're talking about something else, however make sure your child knows that you are serious. If your child doesn't really want to talk at first that's fine. They may need to just listen to you and warm up to the discussion.
